Cubby Houses Melbourne

Cubby houses delivered across Melbourne

Bubby Cubby is a small, family-run business based in Melbourne's south-east. We sell timber and plastic cubby houses, play centres and swing sets from Hide & Seek Kids, Lifespan Kids, Plum, Kidzshack and Step2, and we deliver right across Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Being local matters more than it sounds. Most of the big cubby brands are based interstate – Hide & Seek Kids is in Queensland – so if you buy direct you're dealing with someone several states away when you have a question about whether a set will fit your yard or when a delivery needs rescheduling. We're in the same time zone, the same weather and the same council rules as you.

Delivery in Melbourne

Cubby houses are bulky freight and travel by road. To metro Melbourne, orders usually leave our supplier warehouses within 1–2 business days and arrive in 2–5 business days. Regional Victoria – Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, the Mornington Peninsula, Gippsland, the Surf Coast – is typically 3–7 business days.

Delivery is kerbside. The driver brings the pallet to the front of your property; they don't carry it through the house or around the side. Cubby house cartons are heavy, so plan to have a second person there to help move the panels to where you'll be building. Freight is calculated at checkout from your postcode – metro Melbourne is the cheapest delivery zone we have, which is one of the real advantages of buying a cubby in a capital city.

Choosing a cubby for a Melbourne backyard

Block sizes

Newer estates around Melbourne's growth corridors – Point Cook, Tarneit, Cranbourne, Officer, Craigieburn, Mernda – tend to have smaller backyards than the older inner and middle suburbs. If you're on a compact block, a ground-level cubby like the Arlo, Millie or Teddy will fit comfortably where an elevated set with a slide and swing arm will not. Our small cubby houses collection is filtered for compact footprints.

If you're in Eltham, Warrandyte, the Dandenongs or anywhere with a quarter-acre block, an elevated cubby or a full play set like the Marlie or River Fort earns its space.

Melbourne weather

Melbourne's swing between hot, dry summers and wet, cold winters is hard on outdoor timber – harder than a steady climate would be, because timber moves as it wets and dries. Two things follow from that. First, finish the timber properly: a painted or sealed cubby will outlast an unfinished one by years. Hide & Seek Kids cubbies arrive with a temporary holding stain only and require two coats of primer and two of exterior paint as a warranty condition; Lifespan Kids cubbies arrive stained and ready to go up. Our painting and maintenance guide covers what to use.

Second, think about where it goes. A cubby in full northern sun gets very hot in January; one in permanent shade under a gum stays damp and grows mould. A spot with morning sun and afternoon shade is the sweet spot, and it's worth standing in the yard at a couple of times of day before you decide.

Do you need a permit in Victoria?

Small, non-habitable backyard structures are generally exempt from a building permit in Victoria, and most cubby houses fall well within that. But councils differ on height limits, setbacks from boundaries and overlooking, and some suburbs have heritage or bushfire (BAL) overlays that change things. If your cubby is elevated, tall, or going close to a fence, a five-minute call to your council's planning counter will settle it. We can't give council advice, but we can tell you the assembled height and footprint of anything we sell – just ask.

Can I see one before I buy?

We don't run a showroom – keeping overheads down is part of how we keep prices at or below the brands' own. What we can do is send you extra photos, customer photos of finished builds, exact dimensions and an honest opinion about whether a particular model suits your yard. Send us a photo of the space with a rough measurement and we'll tell you what fits.
