Newport Cubby House

The Newport is the cubby people buy when they want it to look like it belongs in the garden rather than parked on it. It's Hide & Seek Kids' Hamptons-style house: arched double-casement windows, a split barn door (top half opens on its own, which toddlers love and parents find useful), a decorative chimney and a picket verandah across the front. It's ground-level, so there's no deck to climb and nothing to fall from – this is a house to play house in.

Size and who it suits

Door height is about 145 cm, the tallest in the Hide & Seek range, so it works from age 3 right through to pre-teens and it's comfortable for an adult to duck inside for tea parties. It needs a flat, well-drained base – a timber deck or concrete slab is ideal; loose pavers won't keep it square. Not cyclone-rated, so if you're in a cyclone region it needs shelter in severe weather.

What arrives and what's involved

Six cartons totalling about 229 kg, delivered kerbside by assisted delivery, so plan for two adults to carry it through. Pre-fabricated panels, printed manual in the box, and 4–5 hours for two people to assemble. Like all Hide & Seek timber cubbies it arrives with a temporary water-based stain and must be primed and painted with exterior paint (two coats of each) for durability and warranty – paint the panels flat before you assemble. Perspex windows with opening side panels give ventilation in summer.
